My 17 week old whippet puppy (not him in icon, thats my adult whippet) has a bad heart condition. Confirmed today by a veterinary cardiologist. He has a congenital condition called pulmanry stenosis. His valve going to his pulmonary artery is floppy- very floppy. Its fixable with surgery, 85% success rate. But the surgery is very costly (2-3 grand).... Without surgery, this condition leads to heart failure in about 5 years. Its best to fix it when little, because like children, puppies bounce back and cumulative damage stops fast and heart damage is minimal.

advice?

I would start saving money now and maybe look into a new credit card (Care Credit, maybe? Is that the name?) or something. See what kind of payment options you have with your vet.

I agree. If you are upfront with your vet, they will often let you work out a payment plan. Ditto to the care credit and the new cc. It sucks, but if the dog really needs the surgery there isn't much you can do. Maybe contact the whippet breed clubs/rescue groups and see if they have any suggestions?

It makes me upset that the breeder sort of knew about this- but they refunded you correct? I hope they carefully monitor the other pups in the litter as this is usually a gentic factor and it would be bad to breed that pairing again. (at least with my knowledge of whippets and whippet breeders sharing this with me)
I say since you love him and own him you have to find a way to fix him up. Perhaps a small loan and explain the situation to your vet of choice. Hoping all the best for this poor lil guy... My Neo whippy sends many tail wags and well wishes. :(
